Tinubu dissolves 2 ministries, joins 2 others
President Bola Tinubu’s long-awaited cabinet reshuffle has commenced with the dissolution of the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs and the Ministry of Sports Development.
Bayo Onanuga, the presidential spokesman, made this announcement on Wednesday.
A new Ministry of Regional Development will now oversee all regional development commissions, including the Niger Delta Development Commission, North West Development Commission, South West Development Commission, and North East Development Commission.
Meanwhile, the National Sports Commission will assume the responsibilities previously held by the Ministry of Sports.
These decisions were made during a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday. Onanuga also confirmed the merger of the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy.
The future of Abubakar Momoh, the former Niger Delta Affairs Minister, and John Enoh, the former sports minister, remains uncertain.
Additionally, details regarding the leadership of the merged ministry are pending clarification, as it is not yet clear whether Hannatu Musawa, the culture minister, or Lola Ade-John, the tourism minister, will oversee the new entity.
Tinubu has faced mounting pressure to reorganize his cabinet. Last month, Onanuga hinted that a reshuffle was imminent, stating that the president had expressed his desire to make changes, although no specific timeline was provided.
During a press conference at the State House in Abuja on Wednesday, Onanuga noted that while significant work has been done, the public remains largely unaware.
He urged ministers to communicate more effectively about their achievements, emphasizing that the president wants them to overcome their reluctance to engage with the media.
“The feeling out there is that the government is not doing enough, but in reality, a lot is being accomplished,” Onanuga stated. “It is up to the ministers to promote their work and share what their ministries have been doing.”
