My views on Alphabeta and misconceptions about Tax Reform Bills” – Ex-gov

Story by Victor Itodo ABUH

Senator Orji Kalu, representing Abia North, has refuted allegations that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu plans to introduce Alphabeta, a consulting firm, into Nigeria’s tax system through the Federal Government’s Tax Reform Bills.

Speaking during an interview with _Arise Television_ on Monday, Kalu, a former governor of Abia State, clarified that such claims are unfounded.

The assumptions had emerged following concerns that Tinubu might replicate his approach in Lagos State by engaging Alphabeta as a tax consultant at the national level.

However, Kalu dismissed these allegations, stressing the need for comprehensive reforms in Nigeria’s outdated tax laws.

“One of my friends called me and said the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, wants to put another Alphabeta in Nigeria as he did in Lagos State; that is not the issue,” Kalu stated.

“The issue is that we need to make amendments to our laws. I support that our laws, not only the tax bills, are obsolete.”

The senator expressed his support for the Tax Reform Bills, describing them as necessary and progressive for Nigeria’s development.

Last week, the Tax Reform Bills advanced in the legislative process after passing their second reading in the Senate.

However, their progression has faced resistance, with the Northern Governors Forum and the National Economic Council calling for the withdrawal of the bills.
