Fire guts popular Bayan Tasha Market in Yobe, destroys 50 shops

Story by Victor Itodo ABUH

An early morning fire has destroyed about 50 shops at the Bayan Tasha Market in Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State.

Eyewitnesses report that the fire started around 2:00 am on Tuesday when electricity was restored to the area, hours after shop owners had closed for the day.

The swift intervention of the federal and state fire services prevented the fire from causing further damage. While no lives were lost, the state emergency management agency has already begun assessing the extent of the damage and the number of shops affected.

This incident comes exactly a year after a similar fire razed shops in the same Bayan Tasha Market in 2023, adding to the increasing trend of fire outbreaks in markets across the country.

Elsewhere, a midnight fire destroyed properties worth millions of naira at a farmers’ market, popularly known as “Oja Agbe,” in Moniya, Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State. The fire, which broke out at midnight, affected several shops, containers, and kiosks.

Similarly, on Monday, a fire gutted the only market in Trademore Estate, Lugbe, Abuja. The incident reportedly began around 3:30 am following the restoration of electricity by the Abuja Electric Distribution Company (AEDC).

“Today’s incident highlights the urgent need for improved fire prevention and response measures in markets across Nigeria,” said an observer familiar with the recurring issue.
