Buratai files defamation suit over terrorism funding allegation

Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai (retd.), has instituted a lawsuit against a retired senior army officer who allegedly accused him of financing terrorism.

Buratai, through his legal team, described the allegation as false, malicious and damaging, insisting that it was aimed at tarnishing his reputation and long-standing service to the nation. He maintained that the claim had no factual basis and amounted to defamation.

According to court documents, the former army chief is asking the court to declare the accusation libellous, order a public retraction and apology, and award substantial damages for reputational harm.

The suit followed public statements reportedly made by the ex-army general, in which Buratai was accused of having links to terrorist activities during his tenure as Chief of Army Staff — an allegation Buratai firmly denied.

Buratai, who served as Nigeria’s army chief from 2015 to 2021, said the claims undermined national security efforts and discredited the sacrifices of officers and soldiers who fought insurgency under his leadership.
