NNPC reaffirms Port Harcourt refinery is operational
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has reaffirmed that the Old Port Harcourt Refinery is fully operational, with loading activities underway.
NNPC’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Mele Kyari, confirmed this during the commissioning of the NUPENG Towers in Lagos on Wednesday, as stated by the company’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye.
Despite ongoing concerns regarding the refinery’s performance following its highly anticipated restart, the NNPC emphasized that the plant is currently running at 70% capacity and is expected to produce 200 trucks of refined products daily. At present, only NNPC-owned trucks are transporting products from the refinery.
In a goodwill message at the event, Kyari invited human rights activist and lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana, and others who remain skeptical to join NNPC Ltd. on a tour of the refineries in Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna to verify their operational status.
He also addressed the controversy surrounding product blending, clarifying that blending is a standard and essential part of the refining process.
“Blending is not a crime; it is necessary to ensure that products meet the specifications required for different countries or regions,” Kyari explained. “Without blending, off-spec products would be produced, which could damage vehicles. Every refinery blends to align with the required standards, as what is specified in the United States will be off-spec in Nigeria and other countries.”
Kyari also extended his congratulations to the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers on the successful completion of the NUPENG Towers and encouraged the union to maintain a focus on dialogue in its ongoing relationship with NNPC Ltd. and the Federal Government.
