Readers rush to read detained Farotimi’s book on alleged judicial corruption by Afe Babalola (Video)

Bookstores across Nigeria are running out of copies of activist Dele Farotimi’s book, ‘Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System’, as readers race to uncover its claims about prominent lawyer Afe Babalola’s alleged role in corrupting the judiciary.
Popular outlets like Tinu-Ade Bookshop in Ibadan and VIC Bookstore in Abuja reported that the book has been sold out since Barrister Farotimi’s arrest captured national attention.
Online platforms are also witnessing a surge in demand. Checks by Peoples Gazette revealed that the book remains a trending item on Amazon and other online stores, as Nigerians and international readers seek insight into Mr. Farotimi’s explosive allegations against Mr. Babalola.
In the book, published on July 2, 2024, Mr. Farotimi recounts his experiences within Nigeria’s legal system, highlighting its flaws and alleged criminality. He accuses Mr Babalola of contributing to the judiciary’s dysfunction, referencing a Supreme Court case where both were involved.

Discussing the case of Major Muritala Gbadamosi & Ors v. H.R.H Oba Tijani Akinloye & Ors, commonly known as the Gbadamosi-Eletu case, Mr. Farotimi alleges that Mr. Babalola “corrupted the Supreme Court to procure a fraudulent judgment in the service of his clients.”
Following these claims, armed police from the Ekiti State command, reportedly acting on Mr Babalola’s orders, stormed Mr Farotimi’s Lagos office on Tuesday. They allegedly seized phones and other devices, threatened staff, and arrested Mr Farotimi, taking him to Ado-Ekiti.
At his arraignment before an Ado-Ekiti magistrate court, Mr Farotimi faced a 16-count charge of defamation against Mr Babalola. He pleaded not guilty, but Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun denied him bail, ordering his detention until December 10.
Ironically, Mr Babalola has previously called for courts to avoid entertaining disputes between individuals, emphasising public interest. The nonagenarian lawyer, who once donated millions of pounds to King’s College London for African students’ education, has built a controversial legacy.

He served as counsel to military rulers like Ibrahim Babangida and Sani Abacha in the 1980s and 1990s. His influence expanded further during Nigeria’s transition to democracy, securing legal contracts under President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration from 1999 to 2007.
