Arewa Group urges arrest of former CCT chairman over alleged breach of peace
The Arewa Development Initiative (ADI) has called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS) to swiftly arrest Justice Danladi Umar, the former Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).
In a strongly-worded statement issued in Abuja, ADI’s spokesperson, Ahmed Musa, accused Justice Umar of unlawfully forcing his way back into office after his dismissal by the National Assembly in November. Musa condemned Umar’s actions as a violation of the rule of law and a disgrace to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Assembly, and the judiciary.

“It is unacceptable for someone in the legal profession to undermine the rule of law by attempting to illegally reclaim a position from which he has been duly removed,” Musa said. “This behaviour is a direct challenge to the integrity of the judiciary and an embarrassment to the leadership of the country.”
ADI further recalled that Umar himself had presided over high-profile removals, including the ousting of former Chief Justice of Nigeria Walter Onnoghen in 2018. The group pointed out that neither Onnoghen nor Justice Dahiru Saleh, removed as Chief Judge of the FCT in 2003, resorted to such unlawful actions.
The group warned that Umar’s defiance could destabilize a critical agency responsible for maintaining public service ethics and called on President Tinubu to take decisive action. “This kind of indiscipline must not be tolerated under an administration that prioritises law and order,” the statement read.
Justice Umar was dismissed in November 2024 following a joint resolution by the Senate and House of Representatives. His removal came after multiple petitions and investigations by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions, which found him culpable of corruption and misconduct.
The ADI stressed that allowing Umar’s behaviour to go unchecked would not only threaten the nation’s stability but also undermine President Tinubu’s governance.
“We urge the IGP and DSS to act swiftly and decisively to prevent any further escalation,” Musa concluded.
