Senator Ireti Kingibe storms out over Wike’s demolitions
A dramatic scene unfolded in the Senate on Thursday when Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), stormed out in protest after being denied the opportunity to present a motion on demolitions in the capital.
The incident occurred during a plenary session when Senate President Godswill Akpabio refused to allow Kingibe to present her motion. This led to a heated exchange, prompting the senator to leave the chamber in anger.
The situation was defused when other senators, including Asuquo Ekpenyong and Oyelola Ashiru, intervened, urging Akpabio to let Kingibe return and present her motion.
After a brief pause, Kingibe returned to the chamber but was asked by the Senate President to apologise for her outburst. Initially refusing, Kingibe eventually relented after further insistence.
Kingibe then raised concerns over the ongoing demolition of structures in the FCT by the Federal Capital Territory Administration, under the instruction of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
She argued that the demolitions, targeting illegal structures and undeveloped plots, were not in line with due process and had caused severe hardship and property losses worth billions of naira.
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from Kogi Central immediately supported Kingibe’s call for a halt to the demolitions. The Senate approved the motion and established an eight-member committee to engage with the FCT administration on the matter.
