Tension in Abuja as soldiers, Wike’s aides clash over building demolition

Tension escalated in Sabon Lugbe, Abuja, on Wednesday during a demolition exercise conducted by officials of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA). The operation reportedly turned violent when soldiers confronted the team, allegedly assaulting members and seizing vehicles.

The enforcement team, acting on directives to remove illegal structures, targeted a fence on Plot 416 allegedly owned by a Major General. Witnesses claimed that the demolition exercise was interrupted after the Major General sent soldiers to the scene.

According to FCTA officials, trouble started when the soldiers blocked the exit with an unmarked vehicle. Private Jamilu, one of the soldiers, allegedly cocked his rifle and ordered a caterpillar operator to stop working, threatening to shoot.

“He grabbed the operator, tore his shirt, and flattened the caterpillar’s tyres by firing at them. Shortly after, the Major General arrived with reinforcements, and the situation worsened.”

Six enforcement officials, including the site officer, were reportedly assaulted and taken hostage at the Major General’s residence. Additionally, three Hilux vehicles belonging to the team were confiscated, while other vehicles had their tyres shot flat.

The Trademore Division Police Officer arrived at the scene but was reportedly ignored by the Major General. The officer later left, promising to return.

This incident has raised concerns about the ongoing demolition exercises spearheaded by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. While Wike defends the demolitions as efforts to restore order, the exercises have sparked widespread criticism, with the Senate calling for an investigation and a halt to the demolitions.

The tension in Sabon Lugbe is the latest in a series of controversies surrounding Abuja’s demolition activities, further intensifying debates about governance and enforcement in the Federal Capital Territory.
