DSS detains Kaduna activist over video alleging French military plans in Nigeria

Mahdi Shehu, a prominent Kaduna-based activist and political commentator, has been arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) over a controversial viral video regarding a foreign military base in Nigeria.

The arrest took place over the weekend, following allegations that Shehu shared outdated footage suggesting the Nigerian government was planning to establish a French military base in the North-West region.

Although Shehu later deleted the video, it had already spread widely online, sparking national security concerns.

Security sources, including Zagazola Makama, a well-known counter-insurgency expert in the Lake Chad region, have confirmed that Shehu is currently in DSS custody in Kaduna. There are reports that authorities have directed that he be arraigned in court soon while ensuring his legal rights are respected during his detention.

Shehu’s lawyer, Mustapha Abubakar, was informed of the arrest by Shehu’s family but was unable to provide further details, as he is not currently in Kaduna. The DSS has yet to release an official statement regarding the arrest.

This incident follows a previous arrest in February when Shehu was detained by the police in Abuja after a petition was filed by the law office of the former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami. Sources indicated that the arrest might have been linked to Shehu’s efforts to demand accountability from Malami and other members of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
