Residents scoop fuel after tanker overturns in Taraba

Photos circulating online show residents rushing to scoop fuel from a collapsed petrol truck in Jalingo, Taraba State, on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.

An eyewitness confirmed that the tanker had overturned, spilling its contents onto the ground. Despite the obvious dangers, many residents ignored the risk and began collecting the fuel until police and NSCDC officers arrived to disperse the crowd.

This incident occurred around 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

This event follows a similar tragedy in Niger State, where a petrol tanker explosion occurred while people were attempting to transfer fuel from the overturned tanker to another. The explosion resulted in a devastating fire.

Illia Samuel, the spokesperson for the NSCDC, commented, “As soon as we received information about the accident, we deployed our officers to the scene to prevent any further incidents that could lead to casualties. Our focus is to ensure the safety of both residents and travelers in the area.”

The driver of the truck sustained injuries and was promptly taken to the hospital.
