Akpabio denies mocking Trump, labels viral social media post ‘fabricated and malicious’
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has disowned a viral social media post attributing comments to him that appeared to mock United States President Donald Trump over his recent threat of military action against Nigeria.
In a statement released in Abuja on Monday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio described the alleged remarks as “completely fabricated, malicious, and reckless.”
The post, published by a platform known as Rant HQ, had quoted Akpabio as saying: “The killing is taking place in Nigeria, not in the USA. Trump should focus on the US. Nigerians are not complaining about the killings; we are fully satisfied with the condition of Nigeria.”
The statement quickly went viral, sparking outrage and online debate amid heightened diplomatic tension following Trump’s recent comments accusing Nigeria of widespread Christian persecution.

However, Akpabio’s media office firmly denied that the Senate President ever made such remarks “publicly, privately, in writing, or in conversation.”
“The post is a total falsehood — a product of mischief and a desperate attempt to incite misunderstanding between Senator Godswill Akpabio and US President Donald Trump, as well as between Nigeria and its international partners,” Eyiboh stated.
He also criticized the use of Akpabio’s photograph from an unrelated event, saying it was “deceptively used to lend false credibility to a fabricated quote that was never uttered by him.”
“Senator Akpabio is a statesman of international standing and a firm advocate of diplomacy and mutual respect among nations,” Eyiboh continued. “He holds President Donald Trump in high regard and would never make comments on internal matters of the United States or issues under Nigeria’s foreign policy jurisdiction.”
The Senate President’s office described the viral report as “digital recklessness” aimed at causing confusion, damaging reputations, and inflaming diplomatic tensions.
“We urge the public to disregard this falsehood in its entirety,” the statement read. “Those who spread misinformation must desist from peddling fake stories for online attention. Freedom of expression is not freedom to lie.”
The clarification follows a weekend post by President Trump on Truth Social, where he threatened possible U.S. military intervention in Nigeria, claiming his administration “may very well go into that now disgraced country, guns-a-blazing, to completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists.”
Trump’s remarks, made after designating Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” for religious persecution, have sparked global controversy.
Akpabio’s office reiterated that the Senate remains focused on its constitutional duties and on strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
“The Office of the President of the Senate remains committed to transparency, truth, and responsible communication — both domestically and internationally,” the statement concluded.
