Giving Back: Borno scholar Dr Aliyu Mustapha sponsors 100 underprivileged students until graduation
In a remarkable and selfless act of giving back to the community, Dr Aliyu Abba Mustapha, a proud beneficiary of the Borno State Scholarship Board, has graciously offered scholarships to 100 orphaned and underprivileged pupils of Government Primary School, Abbaganaram, covering their educational needs until graduation.
Speaking exclusively to Neptune Prime, Dr Aliyu Abba Mustapha, who hails from the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council and serves as a dedicated staff member at the University of Maiduguri, said the gesture was his way of giving back to society and appreciating the government’s investment in his education.
He expressed his profound gratitude to the Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, for sponsoring his studies through the 2021–2024 Borno State Scholarship Board Scheme, where he successfully earned his PhD in Statistics from the prestigious Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).

He said, “I was motivated to engage in this project as a way of giving back to Borno State for the support I received. I sincerely appreciate the Borno State Scholarship Board and the efforts of His Excellency, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, for prioritising education and providing invaluable support to students like me.
“I am truly grateful that our governor sponsored me even without knowing me personally. I don’t know how to repay the Borno State Government for this kindness, so I went straight to Government Primary School at Abbaganaram and sponsored 100 orphaned students, supporting them until their graduation.
Dr Mustapha highlighted the essence of supporting education, which remains the most powerful tool for lasting change and sustainable development.
In her remarks, the Headmistress of Government Primary School, Abbaganaram, Malama Amina Modu, commended the remarkable and inspiring gesture, describing it as a heartwarming act of generosity, and urged other well-meaning individuals to emulate such noble compassion by contributing to the upliftment of their communities.
She remarked that no one had ever come to their aid in such a touching manner, and she prayed earnestly that other citizens who have benefited from the government’s goodwill would be inspired to give back and support their communities, even through the smallest acts of kindness.
Dr Mustapha urges well-meaning Nigerians to invest in education for sustainable development, highlighting the need for collective investment in education to drive progress.
“Change begins with you and me. Every well-meaning individual, whether a civil servant, political office holder, or community member, has the power to make a difference.
“Supporting our communities, even in small ways, helps nurture responsible, educated, and valuable citizens who will contribute positively to the nation.
“Let us take the initiative to give back, uplift those in need, and set a standard for others to follow. Our actions today will shape the future, and posterity will judge us not by words, but by the good we have done. Together, we can build stronger, thriving communities and a brighter nation.
“I have come to understand that when you help others selflessly, God rewards you in return. With the support I received from people in Nigeria and Malaysia, I have successfully graduated with my PhD with flying colours,” he said.
