Malema Mocks U.S. Visa Ban Threat: ‘I’ll enter Africa, eat Nigerian jollof’

Story by Susan Mbamah

Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), made the remarks during a public event where he addressed reports that the United States might impose travel limitations against him. In response, he repeatedly emphasised his connection to Africa and downplayed the significance of an American visa.

“Even if America decides that I should no longer enter America, it’s okay,” Malema said. “I will enter Zimbabwe, Botswana, Nigeria, Africa, my home.” He added, with humour, that he would prefer local African cuisine to Western fast food, saying: “Why should I be concerned about people who are going to feed me burgers and make me fat when I can go to Nigeria and eat jollof rice with goat pepper soup?”

Malema’s comments underline his stance against what he describes as Western interference in African political affairs. He reiterated that threats of visa bans from countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom would not influence his political activities.

“So you want to threaten me that you won’t give me a visa to America or London? I don’t care,” Malema said, drawing applause from supporters. His remarks reflect ongoing tensions between some African political figures and Western governments over diplomatic relations, governance expectations and human rights concerns.

The United States government has not formally confirmed any specific visa ban against Malema, but his remarks come amid heightened scrutiny of several African political leaders by Western capitals.
