Tinubu to present 2026 budget at NASS

story by Farida Abba

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will today present the 2026 Appropriation Bill to a joint session of the National Assembly. The presentation is scheduled for 2 p.m., following the President’s formal request to the Senate seeking approval to address lawmakers.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who read the President’s letter during plenary, confirmed the arrangement. However, some senators raised concerns over the timing, noting that it coincides with Muslim prayer hours. Akpabio assured lawmakers that he would consult with the President on the issue.

This development comes one year after Tinubu laid the 2025 budget before the Assembly on December 18, 2024. The ₦49.7 trillion proposal for 2025 prioritised defence and security (₦4.91tn), infrastructure (₦4.06tn), education (₦3.5tn) and health (₦2.4tn), among other sectors.

Notably, the 2025 proposal was about ₦20 trillion higher than the 2024 budget, Tinubu’s first as President. The Senate had increased the initial ₦27.5 trillion proposal for 2024 by ₦1.2 trillion, approving a final figure of ₦28.7 trillion.

In the 2025 fiscal plan, crude production was projected at 2.06 million barrels per day, alongside expectations of reduced dependence on imported petroleum products and growth in locally refined exports.

Speaking during the 2025 budget presentation, President Tinubu reiterated his commitment to economic renewal, insisting that reforms were yielding results and would not be reversed. He emphasised national unity in confronting challenges such as corruption and insecurity, urging Nigerians to focus on action rather than lamentation.
