All abducted Niger schoolchildren regain freedom as remaining 130 are released

All pupils abducted in Niger State have regained their freedom following the release of the final 130 schoolchildren, bringing an end to months of captivity.

The development was confirmed by the Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umar Bago, through the state government on Sunday. Governor Bago expressed relief over the safe return of the pupils and thanked security agencies, community leaders, and stakeholders who worked tirelessly to secure their release.

According to the state government, the children were reunited with their families after undergoing initial medical checks and security debriefings. Officials said arrangements have been made to provide psychosocial support to help the pupils recover from the trauma of their ordeal.

The governor commended the efforts of the Niger State Ministry of Education, traditional rulers, and security operatives involved in the rescue process, while reiterating his administration’s commitment to improving security around schools.

Governor Bago also assured residents that measures are being strengthened to prevent a recurrence of such incidents, stressing that the safety of students remains a top priority.

The abduction of the pupils had sparked nationwide concern and renewed calls for stronger protection of schools across the country.
