Rivers assembly asks chief judge to probe Fubara as impeachment process advances
The Rivers State House of Assembly has formally asked the Chief Judge of Rivers State to constitute a panel to investigate Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, as the impeachment process against them moves to the next stage.
The resolution was passed during plenary, where 25 lawmakers voted in support of invoking Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers the Chief Judge to set up a seven-member investigative panel to probe allegations of gross misconduct against a governor and deputy governor.
The allegations leveled against Governor Fubara and Deputy Governor Odu include budgetary impropriety, failure to present the 2026 Appropriation Bill to the House, unauthorized expenditure of public funds, and alleged withholding of statutory allocations meant for the legislature.

The sitting was presided over by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, who subsequently directed the Clerk of the Assembly to transmit the resolution to the Chief Judge within the constitutionally stipulated timeframe.
The impeachment process was initiated earlier when the Assembly served impeachment notices on Governor Fubara and Professor Odu, accusing them of actions considered to amount to gross misconduct under the constitution.
The latest move deepens the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, which has seen sharp divisions within the political class and heightened tension between the executive and the legislature.

As of the time of filing this report, the Chief Judge of Rivers State has not issued an official response on when the investigative panel will be constituted. Meanwhile, political observers and civil society groups continue to monitor developments closely, calling for strict adherence to constitutional provisions and due process as the impeachment proceedings unfold.
