No lasting peace without security agencies returning to proper roles – El-Rufai

Former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has warned that Nigeria will not achieve lasting peace unless security agencies return to their constitutional and professional responsibilities.

El-Rufai made this assertion while speaking on national security challenges, stressing that peace cannot be sustained when security institutions drift from their primary duty of protecting citizens and upholding the rule of law.

According to him, Nigeria’s security architecture has increasingly focused on what he described as “regime security” rather than people-centred security, where the safety, rights and wellbeing of citizens are prioritised. He argued that this approach has weakened public trust in security agencies and contributed to persistent insecurity across the country.

The former governor noted that true peace goes beyond the deployment of force, adding that justice, fairness and accountability must form the foundation of national security. He maintained that security agencies should operate strictly within the confines of the Constitution and remain neutral, professional and accountable to the people.

El-Rufai also called for reforms that would reposition security institutions to serve all Nigerians without political bias, warning that failure to do so would continue to undermine democratic stability and national cohesion.

His comments come amid growing concerns over banditry, terrorism, kidnapping and other forms of insecurity, as stakeholders continue to debate the need for comprehensive security sector reforms in Nigeria.
