Reps to hold emergency sitting over 2027 Election timetable

The House of Representatives has announced plans to hold an emergency sitting on Tuesday to deliberate on issues surrounding the recently released timetable for the 2027 general elections.

The development follows the announcement by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which fixed the presidential and National Assembly elections for February 20, 2027, and governorship and state assembly elections for March 6, 2027.

According to a memorandum issued by the Office of the Speaker, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, lawmakers are expected to reconvene to address concerns raised over the election dates and their broader constitutional implications. The notice, signed by House spokesperson Hon. Akin Rotimi, urged members to prioritise attendance due to the importance of the matter.

The emergency session comes amid concerns that the February 20 presidential election date coincides with the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which is expected to take place around that period. Some stakeholders have expressed fears that holding elections during Ramadan could affect voter turnout and participation, particularly in predominantly Muslim communities.

The House is expected to deliberate on possible legislative steps, including adjustments to statutory timelines where necessary, to ensure inclusivity and protect the integrity of the electoral process.
