Retirement taught me a lesson I never expected to learn, by MZ
When I was working, many people greeted me with smiles, sought my advice, and wanted to be around me. I thought those relationships would last forever. But after retirement, I discovered that some people were only attached to my position, not to me.
Some slowly distanced themselves. Some acted as if I no longer mattered. Others seemed disappointed that retirement had not broken me. They expected to see me wearing worn-out clothes, struggling, or living a miserable life.
What they failed to understand is that retirement is not the end of a person’s value. A person’s worth is not measured by an office, a title, or a monthly salary. Character, dignity, wisdom, and experience do not retire.
Yes, there were moments when rejection hurt. There were days when silence spoke louder than words. But with time, I realised that those who leave when your position is gone were never truly walking with you they were walking with your title.
Today, I choose gratitude over bitterness. I am thankful for the years I served, the lives I touched, and the lessons I learned. I may be retired from work, but I am not retired from living, learning, helping others, and enjoying life.
To every retiree facing rejection: hold your head high. Your story did not end with retirement. You are still valuable. You are still respected. You are still a blessing to your family, your community, and everyone who truly knows your worth.
The people who judge you by your status will eventually discover that positions are temporary. But integrity, kindness, and a good name remain long after retirement.
Retirement changed my job, but it did not change who I am.
