Kidnapped Ex-Military Spokesman, Maj.-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, dies in captivity

Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, has reportedly died while in captivity after being abducted by bandits in Katsina State.

The tragic development was confirmed on Saturday by the Katsina State Government through the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu. According to the government, the retired military officer died from complications related to diabetes and hypertension while being held by his captors.

“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity,” the statement said, adding that efforts by the state government and security agencies to secure his release were unsuccessful.

Abubakar and his wife were abducted on May 30 while travelling along the Katsina–Matazu Road in Katsina State after armed bandits reportedly ambushed their vehicle. Their driver escaped with gunshot injuries, while the couple was taken to an unknown location.

In recent days, videos released by the kidnappers had surfaced online showing the former defence spokesman and his wife appealing for intervention to secure their freedom.
