UNILAG Marines will on Wednesday host UNIBEN Royals in the opening fixture of the 2018 Higher Institutions Football League.
The star match, which promises great excitement, will be watched by NUGA, NUC and NFF officials alongside some ex-Internationals at the University of Lagos Sports Complex.
In another tough fixture, University of Ibadan face Obafemi Awolowo University.
During the draw the 16 institutions listed for the league were paired into two zones – Sahel and Coastal. Northern universities will play in Sahel A and B with their Southern counterparts playing in Coastal A and B.
Chief Technical Director, Pace Sports and Entertainment Marketing, Olamide Adeyemo, said the teams were divided into Coastal Conference (South) and the Sahel Conference (North) for proximity and effective administration.
In Sahel A, BUK Stallions will be up against UDU Sultans while Ilorin Warriors and ABU Nobles clash in the other game.
In Sahel B, ATBU Bravehearts play Jos Highlanders with UNIMAID Desert Warriors and UAM Tillers battling for the other slot in the group.
UNN Lions host UNICAL Malabites while UNIPORT Sharks welcome DELSU Titans.
Former NFF member Gara Gombe said the competition would provide an opportunity to improve football in the country.
