Tambuwal calls for calm in Sokoto after U.S. airstrikes

Former Governor of Sokoto State and Senator representing Sokoto South, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has called on residents of the state to remain calm following reports of U.S. airstrikes carried out in parts of the state.
In a statement on Friday, Tambuwal urged citizens not to panic or spread unverified information, stressing that efforts were ongoing to obtain full details of the operation from relevant security authorities. He said the safety of civilians must remain a top priority in any security operation.
The senator noted that counterterrorism actions are targeted at criminal and terrorist elements threatening peace and stability, and not innocent residents. He appealed to traditional leaders, community heads, and youths to cooperate with security agencies and avoid actions that could heighten tension.

Tambuwal also cautioned against misinformation and rumours, warning that such reports could worsen fear and insecurity in the state. He assured residents that he was in touch with appropriate authorities to ensure that lives and property were protected.
Reports of the airstrikes had earlier caused anxiety in some parts of Sokoto, with residents expressing concern over loud explosions and unusual military activity. However, no official report of civilian casualties has been confirmed.
The development comes amid intensified efforts to tackle terrorism and banditry in parts of north-western Nigeria. Authorities are yet to release full details of the operation as investigations continue.
