The International Journal of Surgery Case Reports (IJSCR) recorded a case of a first-ever human born with three penises in Duhok, Iraq.

The study revealed that the three-month-old baby was diagnosed with Triphallia after series of checkup were conducted on him when he started growing two more skin projections at the base of his scrotum, which was later discovered as penises.

The study said the first one was about 2cm in length with glans and was attached to the root of the penis while the third one was about 1cm and was below the scrotum, and that only one of the penises was functional, which led to the removal of the two others attached to the shaft of his actual penis through surgery.

The researchers also note that this condition was not of genetic abnormality, nor drug abuse or exposure while pregnant.

“There was no negative history of drug exposure during pregnancy, the family history for any relevant genetic abnormalities and psychosocial histories were also negative,” the researchers said.

It also made relevant to other cases of such, saying one in every five to six million boys is born with more than one penis, with around 100 cases of diphallia, two penises recorded worldwide in the 1600s, which is now called supernumerary penises, that refers to extra members in a male.

The lead researcher, Shakir Saleem Jabali, said there were complications from the surgery.

“Triphallia (three penises) is an unreported condition in a human until now, patients with supernumerary penises have a unique presentation and no cases are identical, the position of the penis may be ectopic or orthotopic,” it added.

“Treatment is difficult because it poses medical, ethical, and cosmetic aspects, a combined multidisciplinary team is required for the management and long-term follow-up is required. Excision or reconstruction of the duplicate penis is required depending on the corporal development and anatomy of the urethra.”
