The Federal Government has approved the mandatory use of the national identity number beginning January 1, 2019.
The National Identity Management Commission made this known on Wednesday in a statement signed by its Head, Corporate Communications, Loveday Chika Ogbonna.
The statement revealed that the “Federal Executive Council has approved the immediate commencement of the implementation of a strategic roadmap for Digital Identity Ecosystem in Nigeria at its meeting, held on Wednesday, September 12th, 2018 and chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.”
Engr. Aliyu Abubakar Aziz, the Director-General/CEO of NIMC, said the NIMC act gives the commission the power to set a date for the enforcement of the use of NIN for eligible transactions.
The NIN is to be used for international passport registration, health insurance, financial transactions and drivers license.
The DG said the cut-off date for data eligible for harmonisation with the National Identity Database (NIDB) is December 1, 2018.
