Zulum suspends French NGO for conducting gun shoot training at Maiduguri hotel

The Governor of Borno state, Babagana Zulum, has on Saturday directed the immediate suspension of ACTED, an international Non-Governmental Organization (iNGO) following police discovery that the humanitarian iNGO was using a hotel in Maiduguri to train some persons on gun shooting.

The governor’s spokesperson, Malam Isa Gusau, while announcing the Governor’s directive, said the French iNGO was found using toy guns and simulators in training exercises at a hotel located off a circular road in Maiduguri.

Gusau explained that the discovery was made after residents near the hotel reported to officials about hearing sounds of gunshots from the hotel, after which government officials reported the matter to GRA Divisional Police Headquarters who later visited the hotel’s location.

The police discovered some toy pistols at the hotel while two Nigerian trainers, have been apprehended and are currently at the police station as the investigation continues.

The statement also said Governor Zulum has directed the sealing of the hotel involved and suspension of ACTED from any humanitarian activity in the State pending the outcome of the ongoing police investigation.

Gusau however states that the Governor still acknowledges and deeply appreciates the roles of credible iNGOs which have been providing critical humanitarian services in different parts of Borno state.

Zulum also assured the iNGOs of his government’s continued cooperation and support while also upholding obedience to prevailing laws, policies and rules guiding all activities and actions across the state.
