Pressure to provide for my family made me steal school bus – Suspect

The Osun State police command has arrested and paraded a 43-year-old man named Adejumo Maruf who has confessed to stealing a school minibus commonly called Korope.

The suspect, who was paraded at the police headquarters in Osogbo, said the only reason he stole the bus was because of the “excessive love he has for his wife and children”.

He said “It is true I stole a Korope at Criterion Nursery and Primary School, Kelebe area, after working with the school for about three months. I did it to make money and take care of my wife and children.

While speaking to newsmen at the police command headquarters, Maruf said poverty really affected his marriage and his entire life after his wife left him and took their five children along, because he couldn’t provide for them.

According to him, everything was going on well when he was based in Lagos until he relocated to Osogbo two years ago.

“I was living a decent life in Lagos State before things went bad for us two years ago and we relocated to Osogbo. There was still no improvement, so my wife left with our five children.

“Things became more difficult after then, so I took to driving the school minibus. After about three months, I went into the school and drove it away to Lagos.

The suspect said he took the bus and was using it to generate money he can use to bring his family back home, as he loves them dearly and can go an extra mile for them.

“I was using it as a passenger bus before I was caught after two days in the Ajah area of Lagos State. I love my wife and children and can do anything for them,” he stressed.

The Osun State Commissioner of Police, Olawale Olokode while narrating the incident to newsmen said the suspect used his position as the school driver to easily gain access into the school and made away with the bus, he later took it to Lagos State and put it to commercial use before he was apprehended by the police. Olokode said the suspect will be arraigned in a court of law soon.
