Dr Mohammad Gana, Yobe State Commissioner for Health, has said the state has completed its COVID-19 vaccination of indigenes, administering over 68,000 doses of vaccine.
Gana, who spoke to Neptune Prime correspondent in Damaturu, said that the figure represented the first and second rounds of the vaccine administration in the state.
According to him, there is no active case of COVID-19 in the state as of Wednesday 7 of July 2021.
He noted that positive cases had significantly dropped to one and two cases in 1,300 to 1,500 suspected cases.
“Since we closed down our isolation centre between October and November 2020, there has not been any upsurge to warrant its reopening.
“Even those isolated ones are mild cases and most of them are asymptomatic; so, the burden has come down and we thank God for that.
Gana, however, said the state would not rest on its oars in ensuring that measures were put in place to fight the disease as it is still existing.
“We continue to educate residents on the dangers of COVID-19 and the need to adhere to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) safety protocols.
“Our molecular laboratories are still open and active. Two more were established at the Yobe University Teaching Hospital, Damaturu, and Federal Medical Centre, Nguru.
“We have put in place a robust surveillance system through our Infection Prevention and Control Team,” he said.
Commenting on the 11 cases recorded in the state as contained in the NCDC update of 5th July, Gana said they were not fresh cases.
Gana said 10 of the cases were tested between April and May, adding that the patients had already been treated and discharged.
He said the remaining one case was also a previous case and the patient was asymptomatic.
