Adamawa former governor quits APC, urges supporters to follow suit

The former Governor of Adamawa State, Senator Umar Bindow, has dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He announced his resignation in a letter dated 20 January, 2023 and addressed to the party chairman of his Kolere ward of Mubi North Local Government.

Mr Bindow did not mention if he was defecting to another political party.

He called on his supporters across the state to also quit the party if they are interested in building a harmonious Adamawa.

The former governor said he quit the APC due to the party’s inability since 2019 to reconcile aggrieved members in Adamawa State.

“This decision is not an easy one but after deep prayers and wide consultations with my family, stakeholders and faithful followers across the state and country at large, I have decided to resign my membership.

“The decision is also a result of a lack of genuine reconciliation of aggrieved stakeholders within the party in Adamawa state since the unfortunate events of the 2019 general elections and the 2022 primary elections.

“While thanking you and the party, I wish to also inform you that my faithful supporters will be joining me across the state in leaving the party to champion the cause of building a harmonious Adamawa that will enshrine unity in our diversity towards our collective development as a people,” Mr Bindow wrote to the APC.

Senator Umar Bindow was the governor of Adamawa state from 2015 to 2019 but lost his reelection to the incumbent governor Ahmadu Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He unsuccessfully contested the APC governorship primary election last year; the election was won by Aishatu Binani, the incumbent senator for Adamawa central.

He got third place after scoring 103 votes behind Binani who polled 430 votes and Nuhu Ribadu, who got 288 votes.

Reacting to the defection, the organising secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa State, Mustapha Atiku Ribadu described it as a huge loss to the party.

He said the development is a huge setback to the party considering the huge support base and the goodwill the ex-governor enjoys in the state.

He noted that although as a human being, the governor has made some mistakes and errors while as governor, his robust achievements especially in the area of infrastructural development must be acknowledged and commended.

“The defection of Bindow at the eleventh hour into the general election is shocking and a huge loss to us as a party. Despite Bindow’s shortcomings, we remember the good tidings he brought into the state through unprecedented developmental strides.

“We will continue to accord him the respect he deserved as the first governor of APC in the state who did his best to transform our dear state but lost the general election gallantly by scoring over 300,000 votes.

“While wishing our former governor well in his future endeavors, I want to restate that we are putting strong mechanisms to absorb the shock of Bindow’s departure. We will continue to work round the clock to emerge victorious in all the elections in Adamawa from top to bottom.
