Again, KEDC disconnects ABU over electricity debt
Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has been disconnected from the national power grid by Kaduna Electric due to outstanding electricity debts. The disconnection, which began on November 28, 2024, has left the university grappling with darkness, further straining its resources.
According to a statement released by the university’s management, ABU has paid over ₦1 billion in electricity bills since January 2024 but still faces significant arrears due to rising tariffs introduced earlier this year. The financial strain has forced the institution to divert funds from its core functions to purchase diesel for maintaining power supply.
“The university has been facing difficulty in footing the monthly electricity bills following an increment in electricity tariffs early this year. ABU has been able to pay over one billion naira in electricity bills since January, in addition to a huge amount spent on diesel. This has been at the expense of critical statutory functions,” the statement read.

The management appealed for understanding from students and staff while working to resolve the issue.
This development reflects a growing trend in Nigeria, where public institutions face disconnections due to mounting electricity debts. Similar cases have been reported at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), and others, struggling with tariff hikes and debts.
Electricity tariff increases approved by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in April have pushed many institutions into Band A, which is associated with higher costs but promises up to 20 hours of daily power supply. However, stakeholders argue that service delivery often falls short, exacerbating financial challenges for institutions.
