Army can protect Nigerians, no need for self-defence – COAS

Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), has defended the restriction on open carry of arms by Nigerians, citing concerns of potential anarchy in light of the recent attacks in Plateau State. Speaking in an interview on Channels Television, the COAS emphasized the need for the Nigerian Army to be the primary defender of the country, dismissing the idea of widespread self-defence.

“I do not support that. I think that is a call for anarchy,” stated General Lagbaja, highlighting the potential chaos that allowing citizens to openly carry arms might cause. He expressed confidence in the Nigerian Army’s ability to defend the nation, asserting that there is no necessity for widespread self-defence.

In response to the recent attacks in Plateau State, General Lagbaja outlined plans for 2024, including the deployment of additional troops to the affected area. He affirmed, “I have reeled out our plans for 2024 for Plateau State. The troops that we are deploying to Plateau are on their way now. This night or first light tomorrow, they should be on the Plateau. We are sending more equipment to enhance the efficiency of the troops.”

The assaults in Plateau State, resulting in over 195 casualties and numerous injuries, have sparked global criticism. The United Nations (UN) has called on the Nigerian authorities to conduct a thorough and independent investigation into the incidents and ensure accountability in fair trials. UN rights chief Volker Turk emphasized the urgency of breaking the cycle of impunity to prevent the recurrence of such devastating violence.
