Australian open champion, Sabalenka, withdraws from Wimbledon over injury

Australian open champion and world number three, Aryna Sabalenka, has been forced to withdraw from Wimbledon due to a shoulder injury.

Tournament organisers confirmed on Monday that Sabalenka, a two-time semi-finalist at the All England Club, will not be competing in this year’s tournament.

The 26-year-old Belarusian hinted at the possibility of withdrawing over the weekend after sustaining the injury during the recent Berlin tournament.

Replacing Sabalenka in the draw is Russian lucky loser Erika Andreeva, who is set to take on American qualifier Emina Bektas in the first round.

Sabalenka expressed her disappointment, stating, “I’m not 100 percent fit now,” acknowledging the severity of her injury.

She mentioned that it is a specific and rare injury that has impacted her ability to compete in Wimbledon.

When questioned about the likelihood of her withdrawal on Saturday, Sabalenka responded, “There is always a chance, yeah.”
