Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday commissioned the three million metric tons Dangote Fertiliser Plant located at the Dangote Free Trade Complex – Lekki Free Trade Zone in Lagos.
The urea fertiliser plant occupies a 500 hectares of land which will produce more than half of the country’s fertiliser needs of about 5.7 metric tons per annum by farmers in the country.

Delivering his welcome address, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Dangote Industries says the commissioning of the plant will contribute immensely in solving the country’s unemployment challenge by providing job opportunities for unemployed youths, value addition to the country’s agricultural sector as well food security.
According to Dangote, the plant which has already commenced production last year in June has been exporting the fertiliser to the United States of America, Brazil, Mexico and other African countries.
President Buhari who gave a keynote address said the plant is expected to boost his administration’s drive towards achieving self sufficiency in food production.
The president commended Dangote and the board of the company for this giant stride which would reduce the country’s dependency on imported fertiliser thereby increasing the inflow of foreign exchange and contribute to the economic growth of the country.
“I am delighted to commission this Dangote Fertiliser plant which has installed capacity of three million metric tons of urea per annum, definitely the second largest plants in the world, the plant is expected to further boost our administration drive towards achieving self sufficiency in food production in the country,” said the president.
“I commend the chairman board and management of Dangote Industries Limited for their business initiatives and kept in real life in building this plant to reduce our dependency on importation of fertiliser, create jobs on a massive scale, increase the inflow of foreign exchange and accelerate economic growth.
“This new plant is a renewed testament to the already knowledge of Aliko Dangote and the leadership of Dangote Industries limited. It also demonstrates their commitment to socio-economic development of our country and the wellbeing of our people I’m confident that the investment in this plant will replicate the growth earlier explored in the cement sector where Dangote cement hold a viable record in our continent’s largest cement producer with footprint in ten other African countries.”
The president and other invited guests including the Senate President Ahmed Lawan, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Ekiti State Governor, Femi Kayode, Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduge, Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele among others had a tour round the production facility.
