Buni approves funding for restoration of 8,000-Year-Old Dufuna Canoe

‎Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has approved funding for the restoration and preservation of the historic 8,000-year-old Dufuna Canoe, marking a major step in the state government’s efforts to revive and reposition its cultural heritage.

‎The Commissioner for Home Affairs, Information and Culture, Hon. Abdullahi Bego, announced the development, describing it as a landmark decision that reflects Governor Buni’s commitment to safeguarding Yobe’s rich history. He noted that the restoration project is expected to boost tourism, education, and economic development in the state.

‎According to Bego, the approval follows a series of strategic international engagements aimed at strengthening the state’s arts, culture, and information sectors. The Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Baba Mallam Wali, led a delegation to Istanbul, Turkey, where officials held extensive discussions with experts in culture, artefacts, and design.

During the visit, the delegation toured several museums and cultural institutions to study global best practices in the preservation, management, and commercialization of cultural heritage. Bego said the insights gained will be applied in Yobe to elevate its cultural monuments and artefacts to world-class standards.

‎The Istanbul mission came after earlier high-level meetings in Glasgow, Scotland, focused on modernizing the Yobe Broadcasting Corporation (YBC) and Yobe Television (YTV) as part of broader reforms to enhance the state’s information infrastructure.

‎Hon. Bego reiterated the Buni administration’s determination to protect Yobe’s historical assets, strengthen cultural institutions, and leverage heritage as a tool for unity, job creation, and sustainable development.
