Burna Boy opens up on faith journey

Nigerian Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy has revealed that his spiritual journey took him from Christianity to Islam as he continues to search for deeper understanding. In a live conversation with American streamer PlaqueBoyMax, the singer said he was raised in a Christian home but later converted to Islam, explaining that his quest for knowledge has left him questioning organised religion.
“I grew up as a Christian, and then I converted to Islam. I have studied it all, and I am still trying to understand what is really going on. The more I search, the more confused I get,” he said.
Burna Boy emphasised that he now focuses more on spirituality than religious identity. “I’m trying to be above belief; I’m trying to know. If you know, you don’t need belief,” he added, describing religion as a “control mechanism” while affirming his belief in a higher power.

Despite rejecting organised religion, the “City Boys” crooner said prayer remains a vital part of his life. “When I close my eyes while praying, I feel like my prayer is being heard,” he noted.
During the same discussion, Burna Boy once again praised Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, calling him “the only artist greater than me.”
Beyond music, Burna Boy is also making his mark in film production. Through his company, Spaceship Films, he executive-produced 3 Cold Dishes, a revenge thriller directed by Asurf Oluseyi, which premiered in London and screened at the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) in Lagos.

With the film set for release across 26 African countries and beyond, Burna Boy continues to expand his influence as both a musician and a champion of African storytelling.
