Chaos as Gombe residents attack FRSC command over intimidation

Story from Usman UMAR

A mob has reportedly attacked the Lafiyawo office of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Gombe State, threatening to damage several property.

Witnesses told that it took the intervention of other security forces to pacify the situation.

According to accounts, the incident was sparked by alleged extortion, intimidation, and a demand for an immediate halt by FRSC officials.

Yahaya Dansa, who operates in the area, mentioned that the conflict arose when several individuals were stopped, leading to a revolt as additional officers from the 301 Artillery Regiment were called in to safeguard the corps’ facilities.

Another observer named Danladi Akko stated that the FRSC officers were pulling over drivers, some of whom were en route to farms.

The source said many drivers pleaded for release, but the situation turned violent when the officers claimed some vehicles had faulty tires.

When approached, Felix Theman, the Sector Commander of Gombe State FRSC, downplayed the incident as a minor altercation, asserting that peace had been restored.

Theman mentioned, “It was a minor altercation, and we have handed the individuals over to the police.”

In response to queries about the involvement of the military in restoring order, he explained, “They didn’t encounter anyone when they arrived. By the time they got there, the group had dispersed.

“The individual who was asked to park did not comply immediately; he went to park his motorcycle and return. The altercation took place outside the office, and I observed the events unfolding,” he said.
