Customs boss visits Illela border, commits to presidential directives on closure

Following the recent closure of the Nigeria-Niger borders due to the political situation in neighboring Niger Republic, the Acting Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, has emphasized that the government’s intention is not to bring hardship to Nigerians.

During a visit to the Illela Border Station, the CGC expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance demonstrated by the residents. He explained that the closure was a decision made by ECOWAS, which is chaired by Nigerian President Tinubu, and is aimed at restoring peace in the region amidst the instability in Niger Republic.

Addressing concerns about the impact on revenue generation, the CGC assured that proactive measures have been put in place to strategically address the situation. He reiterated the government’s commitment to protect the well-being of citizens and businesses, assuring that the borders will soon be reopened, and trade will continue to thrive.

The CGC engaged with traditional rulers and stakeholders at the Illela border, emphasizing the benefits of the closure and urging residents not to panic. He also paid a courtesy visit to the Sarkin Gobir of Gwadabawa, seeking his support in achieving the mandates of the service.

The Emir welcomed the CGC and his delegation, expressing support and ensuring a harmonious relationship between the community and the customs service. The CGC commended the Emir’s commitment to fostering good relationships and assured him of his dedication to the well-being of the residents in the Emirate.

Overall, the government remains focused on restoring peace and safeguarding the interests of Nigerians while working towards the reopening of the borders.
