Customs CG warns officers on misuse of firearms, declares sensitization on Customs act, 2023 open

During the official declaration of a sensitization workshop on the practical implementation of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023, Acting Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, issued a directive to Officers and Men of the Service to apply tactical measures when dealing with citizens, reserving the use of firearms for extreme circumstances that require self-defense

Addressing Senior Officers of the Service on Thursday, July 27, 2023, at the Nigeria Customs Command and Staff College in Gwagwalada, Abuja, Adeniyi stressed the importance of protecting citizens and improving the efficiency of the Customs Service through enhanced trade facilitation, staff welfare, and suppression of smuggling activities.

“We should only resort to the use of firearms when absolutely necessary. The citizens of our country rely on us to protect them,” Adeniyi emphasized.

Highlighting the core mandate of the Service to save and protect lives and properties, Adeniyi reiterated the need for just and honest treatment of citizens, which forms the foundation of the Nigeria Customs Service.

The Acting Comptroller-General has consistently emphasized that the proper implementation of the new Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023 will enhance the proficiency of the Service. He urged all Officers to pay close attention to the teachings during the workshop and clearly understand the importance of the legal framework provided for the Service.

“While the new law provides the Nigeria Customs Service with ample powers to enforce sanctions against criminals who violate Customs laws, it also imposes limitations and obligations that necessitate the use of strategies to implement those powers effectively,” Adeniyi explained. “We must strive to create a conducive environment for trade facilitation and foster friendlier business and port environments.”

By adhering to the principles outlined by the Acting Comptroller-General, the Nigeria Customs Service aims to maintain the safety and well-being of citizens while upholding the rule of law and ensuring efficient trade operations.
