England cruise to S/final after 2-1 victory over Columbia

The Lionesses of England have qualified for the semi finals after beating Colombia 2-1 in the last quarter final match at the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup on Saturday afternoon.

England came from a one goal behind after conceding in the 44th minute courtesy Columbian Leicy Santos’ powerful right foot which sent the ball to the far left corner.

The tally was reduced to 1-1 by England’s Lauren Hemp at added on time in the 46th minute before half-time.

Both teams returned from the break as they must give their all for either side to advance for the semi final.

England kept on pressure in the middle of the Columbian half and perhaps due to lack of energy from the South American side to withstand the Lionesses, it paid off in the 63rd seeing Alessia Russo power her strike into the back of the net to make it 2-1.

The invigorated efforts from the Columbian at the last 10 minutes failed to materialised due to England’s composure deployed until referee’s final blast on the whistle.

England’s qualification for the semi finals will be their third since participating at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Elsewhere, co-hosts, Australia narrowly beat France 7-6 on penalties after a goalless draw in 120 minutes.

They face England on Wednesday, August 16 while Spain do battle with Sweden in all European encounter on Tuesday, August 15.
