Father sentenced to 24 years for raping 2 daughters in Akwa Ibom
The Akwa Ibom State High Court has sentenced a 51-year-old man, Okon Jimmy Ama, to 24 years’ imprisonment for incest, rape and assault involving his two teenage daughters.
The case, which dates back to 2015, concluded after nearly 10 years of legal proceedings. The offences occurred in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, where the defendant repeatedly abused his daughters, who were 13 and 16 years old at the time.
Delivering judgment in Uyo, Justice Winifred Effiong convicted the accused on all counts. The court imposed seven years’ imprisonment on two counts of incest, three years for assault occasioning bodily harm, and 14 years for rape. The sentences are to run concurrently.

During the trial, evidence showed that one of the victims was physically assaulted and that attempts were made to conceal elements of the crime. The court held that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.
The prosecuting counsel, Ofonime Idio from the State Ministry of Justice, described the verdict as a strong message that sexual abuse—especially against minors—will not be tolerated.
Child protection advocates say the judgment serves as an important reminder that incest and sexual violence often occur within trusted family environments, underscoring the need for vigilance, early reporting, and sustained community awareness. They stress that survivors must be supported, believed, and protected through both legal and social systems.
