FCT police deny assassination attempt on Naval officer
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command has denied reports alleging that Lt. AM Yerima, the naval officer involved in a recent confrontation with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, survived an assassination attempt in Abuja.
Over the weekend, some media outlets claimed that Yerima was trailed by unidentified men in black clothing driving two unmarked Hilux vans. The reports alleged that the chase began around 6:30 p.m. near the NIPCO filling station along the Kubwa expressway and continued to Gado-NASCO road, with the officer supposedly escaping through “strategic manoeuvres.”

However, TheCable gathered that Yerima was simply driving a car with fully tinted windows and a concealed number plate when he was stopped by police officers conducting routine checks in the Kubwa area. After verifying his identity, the officers allowed him to proceed.
In a statement, Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the FCT police command, described the assassination narrative as “false” and “unverified.”
“The attention of the FCT Police Command has been drawn to publications circulating on social media alleging an attempted assassination on Lt. Ahmed Yerima,” the statement read. “The command wishes to categorically state that no such incident has been reported or recorded anywhere within the Federal Capital Territory.”
She urged the public to disregard the claims and avoid spreading misinformation capable of causing unnecessary panic.
Providing further clarity, the police explained that at about 6:15 p.m. on November 16, officers on a routine stop-and-search operation at the NNPC Junction along the Kubwa expressway intercepted an ash-coloured Toyota Camry with concealed plates and fully tinted windows. The driver, later identified as Yerima, declined to identify himself and wound up his windows while making phone calls.
Moments later, three naval personnel arrived and confirmed his identity, also taking photos and videos of the scene. The vehicle was then allowed to proceed, and the patrol team continued its operations without incident.
Police said they were “surprised to wake up to maliciously crafted tales” alleging an assassination attempt.
Yerima had earlier been at the centre of a widely publicised confrontation between Wike and soldiers over a disputed plot of land in Abuja—a clash that has since gone viral and inspired numerous skits on social media.
