FG announces creation of federal varsity, medical centre in Southern Kaduna
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a federal university in Southern Kaduna, a move aimed at addressing the region’s educational and developmental challenges.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, who announced the decision, also revealed ongoing discussions to set up a Federal Medical Centre in Kafanchan, Kaduna State.
Shettima made this known over the weekend during a condolence visit to the Kukah family following the passing of His Highness, Yohanna Sidi Kukah, the Agwom Akulu of Ikulu Chiefdom. The late traditional ruler was a family member of Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto.
According to a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), Shettima stated: “With Senator Katung and the member of the House of Representatives, we have reached out to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and he has consented to the establishment of a federal university in Southern Kaduna.”
Speaking at the late monarch’s residence, the Vice President reiterated the administration’s commitment to Southern Kaduna’s development.
He highlighted the appointment of General Christopher Musa as Chief of Defence Staff as a reflection of the President’s dedication to regional security.
“Be rest assured that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has the people of Kaduna and the people of Southern Kaduna at heart,” he said.
Shettima also praised Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, for fostering inclusivity in governance, adding, “Government is about linking all parts to have a sense of belonging.”
He assured that the federal government would collaborate with the state government to advance Southern Kaduna’s development, with a focus on road infrastructure.

In response, Bishop Kukah expressed the family’s appreciation for the Vice President’s visit, stating:
“I want to thank you on behalf of this family. Thank you for being with us. You can see the nature of the place in which we live.
“It took you around three and a half hours to get here. The road is largely broken. I know you will remain a friend of this Ikulu nation and a friend of this community. We are honoured to have you.”
