Story from Hamzat Ibrahim

Dr. Doyin Okupe, a seasoned Nigerian physician, politician, and former presidential aide, has passed away at the age of 72.

His demise followed a prolonged battle with cancer, a struggle that had spanned over a decade and a half.

According to sources close to the family, Okupe had been critically ill in recent weeks, with his health deteriorating significantly.

SaharaReporters reported that he succumbed to cancer, an illness he had been battling for years. The news outlet had earlier reported in October 2023 that Okupe was hospitalised with prostate cancer and was flown to Israel for treatment.

However, it was learnt that his condition did not improve as he and his family had hoped.

Okupe was first diagnosed with prostate cancer 16 years ago and later developed sarcoma in his right shoulder. Despite medical interventions, his health continued to decline until his passing.

A respected figure in Nigerian politics, Okupe served as a spokesperson for former President Olusegun Obasanjo and later as Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan.

He was also a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and played significant roles in various political campaigns.

Throughout his career, Okupe was known for his vocal stance on national issues, frequently engaging in political discourse and media appearances.

His contributions extended beyond politics, as he was also a medical doctor with experience in both public and private healthcare sectors.
