Four police officers arraigned in court for assaulting Nigerian in South Africa
Four South African police officers accused of abusing and torturing a Nigerian made their first court appearance at the Boksburg Magistrates Court on Friday.
The case has been postponed until February 7 when their formal bail hearing will take place.
The officers who includes, one sergeant and three constables were arrested by the police watchdog, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) on Wednesday.
According to Lizzy Suping, a spokesman for the IPID, stated that the allegations against them have been changed from kidnapping and attempted murder to assault with great bodily harm and perverting the course of justice.
The officers remain in custody pending the bail hearing next week.
The Nigerian Consulate in Johannesburg, working with the South African police, filed a complaint before their appearance in court over the assault on January 9 that was alleged to have rendered the victim unconscious.
The officers were arrested on Wednesday at the Boksburg North Police Station by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.
