Gov. Adeleke to pardon man sentenced to death for stealing fowl

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has addressed the recent news of a young man being sentenced to death for stealing a fowl.

In a widely circulated report, the young man was accused of theft and condemned to hang. However, in an interview, the accused’s parents denied the charges, asserting that their son, a medical student, is innocent and was falsely accused.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, and signed by his spokesperson Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke ordered the state’s Attorney General to intervene.

The statement confirmed that the governor had directed an immediate investigation into the case and instructed the Attorney General to initiate the process of granting the young man a prerogative of mercy before the year ends.

The statement reads:

“I have received reports regarding the case of a young man sentenced to death by hanging in Osun State for stealing a fowl. As a result, I have directed the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice to launch a thorough investigation into this matter and initiate steps for the young man to receive the prerogative of mercy.

Osun is a state that values justice, equity, and the protection of human life. I assure the public that this matter is being handled with the utmost urgency and attention.”
