Gov. Buni flags off flood, erosion control project, commissions water laboratory, treatment plant

Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has launched the ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of flood and erosion control in Buni-Yadi as part of state intervention to address flooding challenges in the area.
Speaking at the ceremony in Buni-Yadi, Governor Buni said the initiative is to fulfil his campaign promises to the people that the government would find a lasting solution to the problem of flood and erosion in the community.
He said the state government is injecting its resources into the project not only to mitigate flood and erosion but also to optimise the water obtained from the floods and use it to boost irrigation for food security and economic prosperity.

Governor Buni urged the community to claim ownership of the project, cooperate with the contractors and protect it for maximum benefit to justify the government’s investment into the project.
He noted “Similarly, the government is providing compensation to those whose lands were affected by the construction of this project.
“I want to especially appreciate the resilience exhibited by the communities who have refused to be discouraged by the destructive impact of the floods and erosion to pursue their means of livelihood through agricultural practice.
“I wish to take advantage of this occasion to launch the distribution of farm inputs, including 500 bags of NPK fertilizer, 85 cartons of liquid fertilizer, 115 solar-powered irrigation pumps, 1,000 knapsack spraying machines, assorted improved seeds of 15 crops and vegetables.
“Others are herbicides and pesticides to the farmers who lost their farms to the floods to engage in irrigation farming,” said Governor Buni.
The governor noted that this further demonstrates the commitment of his administration to make agricultural practice attractive, productive and profitable to all farmers.
Buni pointed out that the project, when completed will provide the state with the opportunity to reclaim the environment with increased agricultural practices.
He urged the contractors to execute the project as contained in the contractual agreements.
Similarly, Governor Buni commissioned the water quality laboratory in Damaturu and water treatment plant in Buni-Gari respectively.
Speaking during the commissioning, Governor Buni said the state government has fulfilled its campaign promise to construct the Buni Gari Dam and water treatment plant which were commissioned.
According to him, the facilities will go a long way in solving the age-long water scarcity in Buni Gari, Buni Yadi and other adjoining communities.
Governor Buni revealed that the dam has a capacity of about 243 million litres of water with an intake structure, pumping system, generator and solar system that pumps water to the treatment plant to supply 300,000 litres daily to the benefiting communities.
He commended the contractors for executing the project by the specifications.
“The community is hereby advised to also take ownership, guard and protect this water project for maximum benefit for now and future generations.
“Similarly, today, we are commissioning the Water Quality Laboratory at the Ministry of Water Resources. This is to ensure that the quality of water supplied to the people is safe for consumption.
“The laboratory provides a check to water-borne related diseases, making the state meet global Water and Sanitation laws,” said Governor Buni.
The governor reassured that the government would continue to provide safe drinking water across the state to improve the health of citizens.
