Gov. Buni pledges ₦35m as Yobe launches 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance

Story by Sa’adatu MAINA, Damaturu

In a solemn ceremony marking the launch of the 2026 Armed Forces Memorial Day and Remembrance Week, Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni announced a combined donation of Thirty-Five Million Naira (₦35,000,000) to support military veterans and the families of fallen heroes.

Addressing attendees in Damaturu on Wednesday, Governor Buni honoured the legacy of Nigerian soldiers who served in historic conflicts, from World Wars and the civil war to contemporary peacekeeping missions with the United Nations and ECOWAS.

“The gallantry of our armed forces, both in past battles and in today’s fight against insurgency, banditry, and kidnapping, deserves our eternal gratitude,” Governor Buni said.

He underscored the profound cost of military service, noting, “Many have paid the ultimate price, while others bear lifelong scars, all in defence of our nation’s peace and unity.”

The financial commitment includes Thirty Million Naira (₦30,000,000) from the Yobe State Government and a personal donation of Five Million Naira (₦5,000,000) from the Governor.

Governor Buni also called on the public to join the effort, urging “corporate bodies, religious organisations, and all well-meaning citizens to contribute generously to the Legion’s welfare fund.”

Reaffirming his administration’s partnership with the Nigerian Legion, the governor directed the Secretary to the State Government to expedite action on requests tabled by the veterans’ group during the event.

The week-long observance will feature tributes, prayers, and fundraising activities aimed at supporting the welfare of veterans, widows, and dependents of deceased military personnel.
