Gov Buni declares war on malnutrition, backs FG’s Renewed Hope Initiative

In a decisive move to combat a hidden national crisis, Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni has established a State Council on Nutrition, vowing to tackle what federal authorities have labelled Nigeria’s “quietest killer.”
The council’s creation follows a high-level advocacy visit to Damaturu on Wednesday by a federal delegation, headed by Mrs Uju Rochas-Anwuka, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Health.
The delegation was in the state to launch the “Nutrition 774 Initiative,” a key component of the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which is being championed by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

During the meeting, Mrs Rochas-Anwuka issued a sobering assessment, declaring malnutrition the quietest killer in Nigeria, as it kills more dreams than conflict ever will.
She underscored the severity of the issue by citing national data, revealing that one in three children under the age of five suffers from stunted growth, and nearly half of all deaths in this age group are linked to malnutrition.
In his response, Governor Buni pledged Yobe State’s full commitment to the federal partnership.

“Our administration has already launched massive agricultural programmes to boost food security and nutrition,” the Governor stated.
He detailed the state’s ongoing efforts to weave nutritional support into its core programmes for health, education, and social protection.

The initiative champions a multi-sectoral strategy, requiring close collaboration between the state’s ministries of health, agriculture, education, and water sanitation to deliver lasting solutions.
