Grain prices drop significantly in Ngelzarma market, Yobe State

Residents and traders in Ngelzarma town in Yobe state have welcomed a significant drop in the prices of grains and other staple food items this week, bringing relief to many households in the area.
According to the latest market update as of July 27th, 2025, prices of essential grains such as maize, millet, sorghum, and beans have witnessed notable reductions at the Ngelzarma grain market in Fune Local Government Area of Yobe State. Market survey revealed that maize (commonly known as masara) is now selling between ₦39,000 and ₦40,000 per 100kg bag. Millet (gero), another staple in the region, is now priced between ₦35,000 and ₦33,000 per bag.
Sorghum, which previously saw slight fluctuations, is currently being sold within the range of ₦26,000 to ₦31,000. The price of large white beans has dropped slightly to between ₦63,000 and ₦65,000, while large red beans, previously more expensive, are now being sold between ₦75,000 and ₦80,000.

Other market commodities have also seen price adjustments. Dried roselle flower, known locally as zobo, is now sold for ₦20,000 to ₦21,000. Melon seeds are going for between ₦44,000 and ₦45,000, although a particular variant is priced higher, ranging from ₦50,000 to ₦52,000.
The market report also indicates that polished rice is currently being sold at ₦125,000 per bag, while the price of broken or locally processed rice varies depending on quality and source. Groundnut prices remain relatively high, ranging from ₦120,000 to ₦150,000 per bag, possibly due to demand and limited availability.

This drop in prices is being attributed to increased market supply and improved transportation logistics within the region. Traders and consumers alike have expressed gratitude and relief, with many hoping that the trend will continue as the harvest season progresses.
“Alhamdulillah,” one trader remarked, “May Allah continue to ease our affairs.” Residents are optimistic that the lower prices will provide temporary respite from the country’s broader economic challenges, particularly for low-income households that are often hardest hit by food inflation.
