DSS releases wrongfully detained young man in Yobe, offers ₦2 million for reintegration

The Department of State Services (DSS) under the leadership of Mr Oluwatosin Ajayi (MON) has released a young man, Mr Ya’u Mohammed, from Gashua town, Bade LGA of Yobe State after investigations established that he was not connected to any wrongdoing, and in a rare humanitarian gesture, provided him with N2 million to support his reintegration into society.

The Special Adviser disclosed the development to Governor Mai Mala Buni on Security Matters, retired General Dahiru Abdulsalam, during a visit to the DSS Yobe State Command Headquarters in Damaturu, where the young man was formally handed over to him by the Service before being reunited with his family.

General Abdulsalam explained that he visited the Command to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the detention and subsequent release of the young man.

According to him, further reviews and findings by the Service confirmed that Mr Ya’u Mohammed had no involvement in the alleged offence for which he was earlier detained.

“It has been clearly established that he is innocent,” Abdulsalam stated.

“Consequently, the Department of State Services, on the directive of the Director General, Mr Oluwatosin Adiola Ajayi, approved his release and reintegration.”

The retired General described the gesture as unprecedented in his decades of public service, noting that he had never witnessed a situation where a suspect was not only released after being cleared, but also provided with financial support to rebuild his life.

“In my over 40 years of service, I have never seen this kind of humane gesture. This is a clear deliberate undertaking by the Director General of the DSS to promote justice, compassion and reintegration,” he said.

Abdulsalam further observed that the young man appeared well nourished and healthy, suggesting that he was properly taken care of throughout the period of his detention.

He disclosed that the Director General approved the sum of N2 million for Mr Ya’u Mohammed to enable him to establish a legitimate means of livelihood and become self-reliant.

“With N2 million, one can start a meaningful and sustainable trade in today’s Nigeria,” Abdulsalam noted, while urging other security agencies to continue to uphold the rule of law and respect for fundamental human rights to strengthen public trust and cooperation.

Responding shortly after his release, Mr Ya’u Mohammed expressed gratitude to Almighty God, describing his ordeal as an act of destiny and faith. He also thanked the Director General of the DSS for the kindness and support extended to him, promising to make judicious use of the funds provided to establish a viable livelihood for himself and support his family.

His father, Alhaji Muhammadu was visibly elated at the reunion with his son. He expressed heartfelt appreciation to the leadership of the DSS for what he described as a compassionate intervention. He finally offered prayers for the Almighty Allah’s continuous guidance, protection, and success for the Director General of the DSS, as well as all personnel of the Service.

General Abdulsalam concluded by praying for the continued good health and success of the DSS Director General, describing the gesture as a commendable step that has set a worthy example in humane and professional security management.
